The hotel-Dieu of Hautefort

Discover this unique museum in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, wich was installed in a « Hotel-Dieu », an ancient medical structure, that goes by from the Italian Renaissance.

This museum explores medical history from the 17th century to the present through the realms of pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, and surgery. Visitors are offered an exceptional collection of instruments, books and unusual objects associating the history of medicine with the history of man.

The this museum in order to promote the Hôtel-Dieu, a unique classified Historical Monument in France, founded in 1669 by the Marquis Jacques François de Hautefort to “bring the consolations of religion to the poor of the region”.

A remarkable collection

The Museum of Medical History is located within the Hôtel-Dieu of Hautefort. To this day, it houses a rich collection of objects and medical instruments spanning various fields such as dentistry, medicine, and surgery. 

A classified Monument

So lucky you are, you’re entering a place that won’t leave you indifferent! In 1669, the Marquis de Hautefort ordered the erection of the Hotel-Dieu, with the same architectural style as the castle. A Greek cross topped with a lantern dome.
